My name is Julian Caletti. I come from Germany, and I am currently working for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research(UNITAR). Within UNITAR, I work for the division for multilateral diplomacy. The United Nations has its second headquarters here in Geneva. The first headquarters is in New York, but the second biggest office of the United Nations is here, right behind of us in the so-called Palace of Nations.
Now this Palace of Nations has a lot of history, because a hundred years ago in 1919 when the first world war ended, it was decided that the League of Nations should be a new world organization for the purpose of peace. Now this League of Nations was hosted here in this Palais de Nations as it’s called Palace of Nations. Unfortunately, the League of Nations didn’t work out very well, but the United Nations took over from 1945 onwards. So here we are in the Palace of Nations hosting many different countries, coming together being really a platform for international negotiations, multilateral diplomacy and many more activities.
Now for a joint program here with the Swiss Chinese Law Association. First of all, we will be here in the Palais de Nations, and you will be greeted and welcomed by a high-level UN diplomat from UNITAR and from UNCTAD, the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development, who will deliver you expert lectures, give you a briefing, set the stage for what it is to come during your field visit to Geneva.
Then we will have a segment where you as delegates can come and present here in the Palais de Nations all your work firm’s your agencies or your institutions. Lastly, we will also attend a multilateral conference on our own, so you will be able to sit in the room experience what the diplomats are doing, first hand right in front of your eyes. We here at the United Nations in Geneva, we are very motivated to have more Chinese partners to have more cooperation between the United Nations in China, bringing our two worlds together, bridging each other, and exchanging.
So our personal vision is really to find more partners, to strengthen the ties, to build more bridges between the United Nations and China, and specifically with lawyers, because lawyers are extremely important. International law is one of the bed rocks of the international order, that we all here are trying to preserve the best we can.
So welcome everybody to Geneva. Welcome to the united nations. We are waiting here for you.
